Why beginners paint shadows too light

Beginners often struggle with tonal values, especially when judging how dark shadows should be. This problem appears in almost every early painting and is one of the main reasons artwork looks flat or washed out. Understanding why this happens is the first step toward improving tonal accuracy.

How your eyes distort shadow values

The human eye automatically brightens shadows to help you interpret the world quickly. This means beginners paint shadows lighter than they truly are. When shadows are too light, highlights lose impact and mid tones collapse.

The phone brightness test

A simple exercise can reveal this effect. Take any photo and slowly reduce the brightness. You will see that shadows stay dark while highlights vanish quickly. This demonstrates how fragile tonal values are and why beginners misjudge them.

How to correct the mistake

To fix this issue, beginners should follow a structured tonal workflow:

  • Block in mid tones first

  • Establish true shadow values

  • Protect highlights until the end

  • Compare values constantly

This approach is taught step by step inside Painting Made Simple.
