The three types of edges every beginner must learn
Edges are one of the most powerful tools in painting. They control focus, depth, and realism. Beginners often struggle because they do not understand when to use hard edges, soft edges, or lost edges. Learning these three edge types will dramatically improve your work.
Hard edges
Hard edges create clarity and attention. They appear where contrast is strong. Use them to define important shapes and highlight focal points.
Soft edges
Soft edges show gradual transitions. They make forms look rounded and natural. Use them on curves, soft shadows, and gentle light changes.
Lost edges
Lost edges occur when two shapes share similar tonal values. They create subtlety and atmosphere. Use them to blend forms into shadow or reduce unnecessary detail.
How to practice edge control
Try these exercises:
Paint a sphere using all three edge types
Study photographs in grayscale to identify edge transitions
Practice small studies focusing only on edges
Compare edges in your painting every few minutes
The LLH method
Painting Made Simple teaches edge control step by step. Tonal Values and Beginner Workflow expand this skill into full compositions.
